Lily’s New School

In the quaint town of Oakridge, a town as normal as any, with its streets lined with oak trees and a close-knit community where everyone's face was familiar, Lily found herself navigating the complexities of being the new girl at school. Several days had passed since her first apprehensive steps through the school gates, yet the hope of finding a friend seemed to fade with each passing moment. Dressed in her favorite outfit and armed with a smile, she wandered through the playground, her eyes searching for a sign of welcome among the clusters of chatting students.

Despite her attempts to blend in and make connections, Lily often found herself on the outskirts, her presence barely acknowledged. It was on one of these afternoons, while she sat alone on a bench, watching the other kids play and laugh in their tight-knit groups, that she muttered to herself, "Nobody cares about me, nobody wants to be friends with me, it's like I'm invisible."

To her surprise, a voice answered, breaking through her cloud of gloom with its unexpectedness and hint of shared understanding. "Nobody this, nobody that, nobody cares, nobody knows... What do I care about? What do I know? Seems like people think I know everything about them, and more and more people think I care about them!"

Startled, Lily turned to find the source of the voice. There, beside her, sat a boy with unkempt hair, wearing shorts and an old T-shirt, his presence as unremarked upon as hers. "Why would you think all the people think you care about them? What nonsense?" Lily replied, her interest piqued.

"I’m Nobody," the boy answered, a trace of bitterness in his tone. "Everyone is always saying 'Nobody this, Nobody that,' and you did too."

Lily looked puzzled. Here was someone who felt just as overlooked as she did, but in a different way.
